Seven important observations made out of Maharashtra local body election results. Mahayuti alliance has come up with a detailed verdict.

The municipal council elections and nagar panchayat elections were dominated by the BJP-led Mahayuti (a combination of the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Shiv Sena under Eknath Shinde and the Nationalist Congress Party) who won the elections by securing 207 out of the 288 municipal presiding posts; the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) on the other hand could secure only 44 municipal presiding posts.

The Mahayuti saw 117 mayor seats and over 3,300 councillor seats of the 48 overall councillors allocated to BJP.Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis termed it as record performance since the party had more than doubled its numbers of 2017.The popularity of development focus is high.According to BJP and its allies, the victory was a boost to a development agenda.Prime minister, Narendra Modi, said people believe in people-focused development by the outcomes.Fadnavis declared that the alliance did not attack one another personally and operated on how to govern the country, develop infrastructure and develop better cities and towns.

Opposition MVA admits defeat but challenges reasonableness.

The Maha Vikas Aghadi that comprises of Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP (SP) said they lost, yet, they question the fairness of the process. Congress president of the state of Maharashtra, Harshavardhan Sapkal, claimed that the elections have not been fair. According to the leaders of Shiv Sena (UBT), the process was marred due to money and the electronic voting machines were compromised. These accusations were refused by the ruling alliance.

The sweep is tempered by regional differences.

Mahayuti performed well in western Maharashtra, Marathwada, Konkan and north Maharashtra, but there were minor parts where opposition remained stiff. The alliance gained 73 out of 100 seats in Vidarbha and Congress scored numerous seats in the district of Chandrapur. NCP of Ajit Pawar still has major strongholds. The NCP led by Ajit Pawar performed well in Pune district and Baramati where it won most of the municipal president seats that it contested. This indicates that Pawar continues to dominate the small towns despite changing alliances statewide

Groundswell before major civic contests

Analysts believe that the outcome provides Mahayuti with a near-timely boost, in time before the upcoming local elections such as in big city councils like Mumbai, Pune, Thane and Nagpur. Local election is commonly referred to as mini Assembly poll and victory in the local election is one way of ensuring that the ruling alliance begins with a bang in these crucial polls.
